Over 6,000 of these Terra Cotta Warriors were originally created by order of the Qin emperor, a despotic ruler some 2,200 years ago. He even ordered clay horses to be made. Why? The Qin emperor had many enemies and he wanted these life-size clay figures, which he had buried with him, to protect him as he traveled in death to his next place wherever. Xian is world famous not only for the Terra Cotta Warriors but as the capital of ancient China throughout 11 dynasties lasting a total of about 1100 years. Xian was also the finish point of the Silk Road which carried caravans of silk and various other luxuries traveling across Central Asia to and from India, the Middle East and Europe.
